Seoul (Korea Newswire) November 19, 2009 10:31 AM -- During a ceremony today at its Bupyeong headquarters, GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GM Daewoo) donated 30 mini-cars to financially challenged social welfare institutions nationwide. The vehicles were paid for by the monthly donations of GM Daewoo employees through the GM Daewoo Employee Foundation.
The vehicles donated include GM Daewoo¡¯s next-generation global mini-car, the Matiz Creative, which was launched in September, and the Matiz Classic. The highly fuel-efficient mini-cars offer low maintenance costs.
Institutions receiving donated vehicles include those that are assisting the disabled, the elderly, troubled teenagers, multicultural families and refugees from North Korea. The vehicles will provide transportation for nursing care, consultation services, meal delivery, medical assistance and many other important services.
Joining GM Daewoo President and CEO Mike Arcamone at today¡¯s donation ceremony were Incheon Mayor Sang-Soo Ahn; National Assembly Members Young-Pyo Hong; Bupyeong Mayor Yoon-Bae Park; and representatives of several Korean social welfare institutions.
Arcamone said, ¡°Since the establishment of our company seven years ago, GM Daewoo and our employees have made it a priority to help those in need. Through the GM Daewoo Employee Foundation and other means, we will continue to fulfill our responsibility to the people of Korea as a proud corporate citizen.¡±
With today¡¯s donation, GM Daewoo and its employees have donated 123 vehicles since the foundation¡¯s establishment in 2005.
Woman Resources Development Center Nam Sang-In said, ¡°The ongoing care for those less fortunate demonstrated by GM Daewoo over the years serves as a great example for other companies.¡±
Sang-In Nam expressed the appreciation of his organization, saying, ¡°GM Daewoo¡¯s employee culture of voluntary and active giving has contributed significantly to local social welfare institutions.¡±
The GM Daewoo Employee Foundation was established in 2005 to support those in need. Among its many contributions, it has provided medical expense support, organized joint wedding ceremonies, arranged kimchi-making activities, and sponsored free concerts. In addition, it has supported the repair of welfare facilities, the donation of goods, and the providing of emergency relief.
